User Case: Want to Back Up My Gmail. Please Help?

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this or not, so I apologize if not. I'm very non-tech-savvy so wanted to ask you guys instead of trying random Google searches. I'm on a brand new (couple months) HP2000 laptop running Windows 7. I've seen there are several different ways of doing this but not sure what's the best method to use (Gmail Backup, Thunderbird, etc.). So, here's what I want to know: Is there a way to back up in the conversation-style of Gmail? Can I save attachments as well as mail? Approximately how much space will 2084 emails + attachments take up? Can I somehow save to a flash drive instead of leaving on my computer? Thanks and apologies for my ignorance!
